Description

This ring presents a refined solitaire form with a crown collet setting supporting a deep blue synthetic sapphire mounted upside down. Instead of displaying the stone’s table upward, the pavilion and pointed geometry become the focal surface. The clean polished shank contrasts with the angular crown setting, emphasising both precision and visual tension between tradition and disruption.

Within the research

This piece forms part of my broader studio investigations into jewellery conventions, setting techniques, and how subtle alterations can transform familiar typologies. I wanted to revisit the classic solitaire ring—one of the most recognisable forms in jewellery—and challenge expectations through a single decisive gesture. By setting the sapphire upside down, the hidden underside of the gemstone becomes visible and celebrated. The crown collet setting was retained because of its historical association with preciousness and formal elegance, creating a dialogue between convention and experimentation. The synthetic sapphire was selected for its saturated colour, precision cut, and contemporary relevance. My intention was to demonstrate that innovation can emerge through reinterpreting established forms rather than abandoning them entirely.
