Description

This ring features the distinctive flowing striations produced through cuttlefish casting, creating rippling lines that move across the copper surface like currents or woodgrain. A polished sterling silver bar intersects the warm copper body, providing contrast, balance, and a focal interruption within the textured form. The result is a ring that feels both raw and refined.

Within the research

This piece forms part of my wider studio investigations into casting methods, surface texture, and the dialogue between precious and non-precious metals. I wanted to celebrate the unpredictable beauty of cuttlefish casting, where the mould itself generates rich natural patterning that cannot be identically repeated. Copper was selected for its warmth and responsiveness to texture, allowing the cast lines to remain vivid and tactile. The sterling silver insert was introduced as a deliberate counterpoint—clean, geometric, and controlled against the organic movement of the cast surface. My intention was to allow process marks to become ornament, while using contrast in colour and finish to elevate the ring beyond a purely rustic object.
