Description

The band is inspired from coral fragments and presents a rugged sculptural band of irregular openings, flowing ridges, and eroded surfaces. Dark oxidation deepens the recesses and emphasises the carved topography, while clusters of pavé-set red spinels emerge across the form like glowing embers within rock. The stones follow the natural undulations of the surface, integrating seamlessly with the organic structure.

Within the research

This piece forms part of my broader studio investigations into wax carving, lost-wax casting, pavé setting, and the expressive possibilities of organically generated form. I wanted to move away from rigid geometry and allow the ring to feel as though it had grown, weathered, or been uncovered from the earth. The original form was hand-carved in wax, allowing intuitive shaping and spontaneous surface development. After casting in sterling silver, oxidation was applied to accentuate depth and shadow. Red spinels were selected for their rich saturated tone and set along the curves of the piece so that they appear naturally embedded within the structure. My intention was to create a ring where stone setting becomes part of the landscape itself rather than an applied decorative layer.
